Frequently asked questions

What file types can I upload?

DXF, DWG, STEP, PDF, JPG or PNG through the quote form. Instant online quoting (coming soon) will take DXF, STEP and IGES files or a zip. A DXF or DWG at 1:1 scale is best. For simple shapes a sketch or photo will do.

What do you need to give me a price?

A drawing, how many you need, the material, grade and thickness, and any folding, welding or powder coating.

How quickly will I get a quote?

We come back with a written quote and a lead time. [Jack to confirm] typical reply time.

Is it worth asking about just one part?

Yes. We cut one-offs all the time. Very small jobs are subject to a minimum charge, included in your quote.

Who provides the metal?

Normally we do. Tell us the grade and thickness and we'll order it in for your job.

What materials and thicknesses can you cut?

Mild steel 0.9โ€“32mm, stainless steel 0.9โ€“30mm, aluminium 1.5โ€“12mm and brass or copper 1โ€“15mm.

What is the largest part you can cut?

We cut flat sheet and plate up to 3000ร—1500mm.

Do you cut tube or box section?

No. We cut flat sheet and plate only.

How accurate are the parts?

Typical accuracy is ยฑ0.1mm on our 6 kW Amada ENSIS 3015 AJ fibre laser. Very thick plate and fine features may vary; ask if a dimension is critical.

Can you do more than cut?

Yes. We can fold, weld, assemble and powder coat your parts so they come back ready to use.

How long will my parts take?

Turnaround can be as quick as 1 day, depending on the job. Every quote comes with a written lead time.

Do you deliver?

Yes. We deliver across the UK on our standard pallet or FedEx rates, or you can collect from Shobdon, Herefordshire.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

[Jack to confirm]

Is there a limit on quantity?

We cut one-offs and repeat batches. [Jack to confirm] any upper limit.

How do I pay?

[Jack to confirm] payment methods and whether trade accounts are available.

Can I return parts?

Parts are made to your drawing, so they can't be returned unless they are faulty. See delivery and returns.

Can I get an instant price online?

Instant online quoting is coming soon. You'll be able to upload DXF, STEP or IGES files, choose material, thickness and quantity, see a price with and without VAT and order online. Until then, use the quote form.

My DXF has errors. Can you still quote it?

Usually, yes. Send it anyway and we'll check it. Once instant quoting is live, DXF files will be repaired automatically.

Do you keep my drawings private?

Yes. Your files are only used to quote and make your parts. See our privacy policy.

Preparing your file

A clean file means a faster, more accurate quote.

Use DXF at 1:1

Draw in millimetres at full size (1:1). Send a DXF or DWG with only the cut geometry on it: no title blocks, dimensions or borders.

Closed shapes

Every outline and hole must be a closed shape. Join open ends and delete duplicate or overlapping lines.

Text to outlines

Convert text to outlines (curves) before saving, so your lettering cuts exactly as drawn.

Hole size

As a rule, keep holes at least as wide as the material is thick. Smaller holes may need drilling instead. Ask if you're unsure.

Tabs & bridges

Cut-out letters and shapes with islands (like the middle of an O) need bridges to stay attached, or they'll fall out.

Tolerances

Typical accuracy is ยฑ0.1mm. Mark any critical dimensions on a PDF so we can check them.

Folded parts

Send the flat pattern if you have it. A STEP file of the folded part also works: it can be unfolded to a flat pattern.

Several parts

Name each file clearly with the quantity for each. A zip of files is fine, and STEP assemblies can be split into parts.

Sketches welcome

For simple shapes a dimensioned sketch or photo is fine. We'll check it can be made as drawn.
